It’s a Wonderful Life is at the top of my list. Also a Muppet Christmas Carol. More recent favorites: Spirited with Will Farrell, Octavia Spencer and Ryan Reynolds and Klaus an animated movie on Netflix that gives a new twist on the Santa origin story.
A Charlie Brown Christmas because it reminds me of Christmas at my paternal grandparent's house. We always had it early because they went to my aunt's in Indiana, but A Charlie Brown Christmas always seemed to be on TV when we went to their house. It was a magical Christmas because they had a formal dining room and they decorated the whole house and we ate on the good china and with the good silverware and there were candles and we had ambrosia and a standing rib roast and everything sparkled and it felt like a magic place. (They had a coat closet by the front door that was always cold and was packed with winter coats, some fur, and when you shut the door it was like Narnia was a distinct possibly through the back wall. It never happened, but...) We were all dressed in our best new Christmas clothes (I remember velvet dresses and white tights and patent leather shoes) and we opened presents in the living room under the tree after dinner. We went home very late and my parents would turn on our Christmas tree lights before we went up to bed. (I'm not crying. You're crying.) Those were the best Christmases.
I do watch It's a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street (the old one) and White Christmas and a Christmas Carol (the one with Partick Stewart, but older ones will do, too.)
Your description of Christmas is exactly how I remember the holiday at our house in the '70s... right down to the standing rib roast! We always ate in our dining room (only on Thanksgiving and Christmas), and I definitely had a velvet dress and Mary Jane shoes :-)
I actually watch 'Airport' every winter, it's not 'holiday' but it's winter (close enough, some people do Die Hard). I watch the classics of course, It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, White Christmas, Holiday Inn, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer (with Burl Ives as the snowman. The Holiday is great. I LOVE Jack Black as a leading romantic man. YES to that. Strong agree on The Sound of Music.
Yes, how could I forget Sound of Music. My family watches it EVERY Christmas eve and at the intermission we break to eat lasagna.
