Tuesday Tea: Tell us about a great sandwich you ate one time!
Portable and delicious...
In last Friday’s episode of The Library of Lost Time, we recommended the new cookbook The King Arthur Baking Company Big Book of Bread (Dave) and delved into the tasty world of the Sandwich Designer of the Year Awards (Mel) — which got us both thinking about the best sandwiches we’ve eaten. There are so many contenders! Our first-ever banh mi in New York City, a life-changing falafel in Paris, a salami-butter-and-pickle baguette from Paul at the airport. (When I was a kid, I hated ham-and-cheese, and one day, my friend Tammy traded me half of her cream cheese and strawberry jam on white bread… mind blown.)

We like to switch traditions up — which doesn’t really make them traditions, now that I think about it. Maybe the change itself is the tradition? One Thanksgiving, Mel whipped up a sandwich that Elvis is said to have loved: thick white toast stacked with bacon, honey, peanut butter, and banana — then fried like a grilled cheese. It’s the kind of meal that silences the table until it’s gone. Simple, fantastic, and indulgent.

Because of the book Sandwiches That You Will Like, we’ve eaten some really great sandwiches in lots of US cities. If/when you come to Prague, let me know so I can share some of my favorite sandwiches here, including the kimchi Reuben from Kro Kitchen and any baguette sandwich from Le Caveau bakery.
Here’s a ridiculously good sandwich you can make at home! It’s like a croque madame where the oven does all the heavy lifting.
We had these for breakfast last Christmas and on my birthday — super easy to make and stunningly good. We made the version with garlic and honey, and we used toasting bread. Highly recommended.
Here's a timely one: sliced leftover roast turkey on sourdough with melty Brie and leftover cranberry relish. It's divine....
I’m always on the hunt for breakfast sandwiches, and the best I ever had was in Madison, WI at an awesome restaurant called Shortstack. The sandwich is made on Stella’s spicy cheesy bread (a Madison staple), with a fried egg, perfectly crisped bacon, fried tomato, and fig jam. I still think about this sandwich all the time and dream about the day I return to Madison and indulge in it again!
