Tuesday Tea: What (and where) is the best ice cream you've ever had?
Soft serve, gelato, homemade, waffle cone, cake cone, cup... let's talk ice cream!
If you listened to the episode of What Should I Read Next with Anne Bogel, where we shared books with a strong sense of summer, you know that Dave has OPINIONS about ice cream.
And really, shouldn’t we all?
A transcript of the conversation we had this morning:
Me: I’m going to ask people about their favorite ice cream.
Dave: Double chocolate chip. From Graeter’s in Hyde Park Square in Cincinnati.
Me: Yes, babe. I know you love Graet —
Dave: Double chocolate chip. From Graeter’s.
Me: I KNOW YOU LOVE GRAETER’S. What about that place in Minneapolis?
Dave: Oh, yeah. Milkjam Creamery. [voice full of awe] That place is awesome. I’m on their mailing list just so I can enjoy thoughts of ice cream.
Then we went to their website and read their special flavors for the summer: Lunchbox Legend (peanut butter ice cream w/ strawberry jam and toasted bread chunks), Grandma’s Banana Pudding, and Yoohoo Puppy (chocolate yoohoo ice cream w/peanut butter puppy chow).
Dave: I don’t care how much it costs. I’m buying us tickets to Minneapolis right now.
[end scene]
News you can use: Graeter’s ships nationwide.
Highly recommended: Subscribe to the Milkjam newsletter so you, too, can enjoy thoughts of ice cream.
Growing up in the Midwest, on a rare hot hot summer day, my dad would get out the hand cranked ice cream maker and after everyone took several turns cranking the mysterious machine, we’d enjoy the most delicious silky soft vanilla concoction. It was kind of a tan color and you had to eat it fast before it melted which was no problem at all!
My go-to has always been chocolate chip, and Rich Farm in Oxford, CT gives you huge scoops of farm-fresh ice cream. BUT, the best we've ever had was the soft serve strawberry with chocolate dip at the Chocolaterie de l'Île d'Orléans (Quebec.) It tasted like FRESH strawberries (they were in season) and the coating was a thick, luscious chocolate (they are a world-famous chocolaterie, after all.) At the first tasted we were TRANSPORTED. We still talk about it.
