I play Wordle with my friend Ellen every day (Hi, Ellen!) — and back in the day when I worked in an office, my pal Stacey and I had a standing date to play Boggle while eating our packed lunches. We were never competitive about it, though. Sure, we tried to earn points, but the real win was when someone came up with a word that inspired the other to coo, Oooh, good one! The timer and scorecard were merely excuses to play with letters and language. (One day, another co-worker joined us, and when she won, she literally pumped her fist in the air, and shouted, ‘In yer FACE!’ She was not invited to play with us very often.)
Last Friday, I shared this post — 5 Preposterous Words That Wordle Will Actually Accept as Valid — and it got me thinking about some of my favorite words.
There are the ones I like to say because they sound funny: higgledy-piggledy, cattywampus, willy-nilly, and igneous. I love the sound and the meaning of serendipity (and its adjective cousin serendipitous), along with elegiac and epistolary (even though I find both of the latter challenging to say). I enjoy languorous because it sounds like what it means.
There are those lovely food-related words that can be applied to other things: buttery, salty, savory, sizzling, syrupy. And I’m always here for onomatopoeia: Who doesn’t love a good splat, clang, clink, boing, or gurgle?!
My final word? Vroom.
Occuponymous - when someone's name matches their occupation! My eye doctor - Dr. Dokter; my former dentist, Dr. Strait; my geology professor, Dr. Rock. It feels serendipitous ;)
Kerfuffle!
