One of the greatest joys of being a reader is finding yourself in a story that holds your attention so tightly that the laundry has to wait, and last-minute take-out usurps making dinner so you can read just one more chapter.

Maggie Smith’s You Could Make This Place Beautiful, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, The King of Birds by Alexander Utkin — although that last one is a bit of a cheat because it’s a short graphic novel that beautifully retells a Russian folk tale. Oh! Nachos for Dinner by Dan Whalen!

I’ve had two so far this summer: The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley (terrible people behaving badly at a manor-house-turned-hotel on the English seaside) and A Death in Cornwall by Daniel Silva (spy-art restorer Gabriel Allon gets caught up in an art caper and British politics).
The God of the Woods by Liz Moore. Gripping story, skillful use of multiple POVs and time periods, and a perfect summer setting.
Horse by Geraldine Brooks. Remarkable story, beautiful writing, strong characters. I found I had to pace myself to keep from devouring in one setting. This was my introduction to Ms. Brooks and I am eager to read her other books.
