I definitely want to go over to the Gamache house for dinner! I love Armand & Reine-Marie’s relationship, and I feel like Annie & I would be besties haha
I choose Count Alexander Rostov from one of my all-time favorite books, A Gentleman in Moscow. I wouldn't want to eat dinner with him though. His impeccable manners, and his connoisseur ways would intimidate me. A nice chat would do.
Amelia Peabody! Love her. She's practical, sensible, and competent, and I'm more of a head-in-the-clouds person, so we would complement each other perfectly.
I'm going with a "don't think about this too much" approach and saying Hannah Coulter from the Wendell Berry book of the same name. She's seasoned, wise, content, and practical and I feel like I'd get great life advice (and probably a slice of pie) from her.
Ooh Gandalf is a GREAT pick! Maybe Franny from Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger without thinking too much about it. Or Addie LaRue. We'd have ages to talk about.
I agree about Martha Ballard (see my comment above), however I really respected her relationship with her husband. Most importantly, he respected her!!! Have you read the non-fiction book about Martha? It’s on my shelf, but I haven’t gotten to reading it yet.
I asked my kids this question! My 14yo says he’s like to meet Bilbo, after his there-and-back-again travels but before the events of the LOTR trilogy. My 10yo says if it’s okay to pick a non-human, she chooses Iggy, Sophie’s pet imp in Shannon Messenger’s Keeper of the Lost Cities series. Ivy has toxic farts and burps, very loud snores that Sophie finds comforting, and changing fur colors.
It’s true, there are loads of book characters I love without necessarily wanting to meet. But I think I would love to meet Jupiter from the Nevermoor books, Hobie from The Goldfinch (a cozy quilt of a character if ever there was one, in a book that is pure anxiety and despair from start to finish), and I mean, don’t we all want to meet Molly Weasley?
I'm going with one from a very recent read ~ Rocky from Sandwich by Catherine Newman. I need a menopausal friend with older kids who absolutely GETS it like Rocky does ~ I'm a little behind her in these stages, but who doesn't need an extra older sister to pave the way?
Kinsey Millhone from Sue Grafton’s alphabet mystery series. Hopefully, she’d make me a peanut butter and pickle sandwich while she recounted her many adventures in Santa Teresa! 🧐😬
Inspector Gamache or Ruth Zardo from Louise Penny series.
I think I'd like to spend time with Clara and Myrna.
It was hard to pick who in the series for sure.

YES! One of those potluck dinner parties with everyone! —Mel
I am just reading Still Life and really enjoying it.
I want to go to the island with them for their summer vacation. —Mel
I’m gonna lean into my fangirl side with this one and say Alex Claremont-Diaz from Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston.
Did anyone else come up with a much longer list of characters they absolutely would not want to run into under any circumstances, or is that just me?
I have loads of characters I never want to meet 1. Voldemort 2. Grindelwald ... seeing a pattern 😀
I am VERY interested in your list of characters you don't want to meet. —Mel

Strong agree with the Count. He is lovely. —Mel
Definitely Vera Wong in Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q Sutanto.
I would also like to meet Vera. I'm glad she's not my grandma though.

Jimmy Perez from the Shetland series by Ann Cleeves and Ruth Galloway from thr Elly Griffiths series.
Oh, good one! I LOVE Jimmy P. —Mel
If I say Godot did I miss the existentialist point?
Nice.
Anne Shirley from Green Gables and Bloody Jack from L A Meyer series.
It would have to be Pierre Bezukhov from War and Peace and Adunni from Girl with the Louding Voice…
Ooh Gandalf is a GREAT pick! Maybe Franny from Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger without thinking too much about it. Or Addie LaRue. We'd have ages to talk about.
Martha Ballard from The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhorn. The era is a personal favorite, she's strong, no bull and does not need her husband.

One of the reasons I mentally threw The Goldfinch across the room in anger was because of the way Hobie was done wrong. I LOVED Hobie so much. —Mel

Just added this to my list too!
My TBR list just grows and grows! Thanks for the suggestion.
I hope you love it!
I can't wait to read her story!
Same!
Kinsey Millhone from Sue Grafton’s alphabet mystery series. Hopefully, she’d make me a peanut butter and pickle sandwich while she recounted her many adventures in Santa Teresa! 🧐😬
She was definitely the first person that came to mind for me too. After reading all the books, I definitely feel like I know her.
Victoria Speedwell, Irene from The Invisible Library series, and Lady Hardcastle and Flo
