Just listened to the Saudi Arabia episode and was excited by the mention of dried limes as I just cooked with them for the first time. A friend recommended a recipe for a Persian herb stew but I had no idea where to find dried limes in my part of regional Australia. My friend ever yo posting some to me that he hadn’t used when making the dish himself. They were like a revelation adding an extra layer of flavour to the dish. I have enough left to make it once more.

Oh, this is so cool! Love a friend that's generous with cooking supplies; that is true love. If you have time, would love to hear more about the stew you made! —Mel

I really enjoyed the article about paperweights! Reminds me of all the ones my grandma had. I used to stare at them in amazement when I was little. I also loved the article about haunted forests. Definitely creepy!! Now I'm ready for fall!!! Thanks for always putting together such neat stuff for us, Mel. Off to listen to the Saudi Arabia episode...

I love how old-timey paperweights seem now. We got a pretty sweet Nefirtiti paperweight on our last visit to Berlin; I love it so much. https://www.smb-webshop.de/media/image/IMG_8989-1527270.jpg And this is the iconic style, right? — https://bit.ly/3ZEfXBl

Hope you enjoyed the new episode!

I'm so glad to see the adaptation of Haifaa Al Mansour's movie on your list of books--but it's unfortunate that none of the others are by Saudis. Too often, the country gets represented by people from the outside. Reading books by Saudis can give far different perspectives, even compared to someone like Mantel who lived briefly in the country.

Here are a few books by Saudis your listeners/readers might enjoy:

-The Book Smuggler -- historical fiction by Omaima Al-Khamis, translated by Sarah Enany

-The Critical Case of a Man Called K -- workplace satire by Aziz Mohammed, translated by Humphrey Davies

-Wolves of the Crescent Moon -- suspense by Yousef Al-mohaimeed, translated by Anthony Calderbank

-The Dove's Necklace -- murder mystery by Raja Alem, translated by Adam Talib and Katharine Halls

-The Call of Paradise -- poetry, by my friend Majda Gama

-Bride of the Sea -- family saga by ME :)

I wrote about a few of these books and Wadjda, on which The Green Bicycle is based, in this essay: https://www.kwelijournal.org/nonfiction/2022/8/9/we-do-tell-you-the-best-of-stories-islam-in-my-saudi-american-narrative-by-eman-quotah
