My wife makes an amazing homemade chicken noodle soup that I love. I am the master of making chili (actually making it today) from a recipe I have been perfecting for over 20 years. Those are our two go-to cold weather meals.

Chili is such a cold weather treat. And chicken noodle soup is pure comfort

But Mel, please don't leave us hanging on the marinara sauce...! 👀

Agreed! The code. Tell us how you cracked the code!

A drink, not a food. Hot apple cider with a little cinnamon liquor. Warms the throat on cold winter nights.

ANY soup or hot tea! I’m originally from Tennessee, so every New Year’s Day I make black-eyed peas with pork, greens, and cornbread, but this year I did something a little different. I went to O’ahu last year and became obsessed with the cuisine, so I ordered their Portuguese sausage and made Portuguese bean soup on New Year’s Day, but used half kidney beans, half black-eyed peas for some Southern-Hawaiian fusion. Kalua pork and cabbage for the pork and greens, and of course cornbread (which is also very big in Hawaii — who knew?!). That’s my favorite winter meal!

I've come up with my own New Year's black eyed peas and cabbage dish. It has sausage, apple, fingerling potatoes, vinegar, and herbes de Provence. I'm not a black eyed peas or cabbage fan, but this is delicious! I really ought to make cornbread with it!!

I like that! Very Alsace-Lorraine, I think. Yes, cornbread and beans just wanna be together, LOL!

Strong, Irish Breakfast tea with milk and sugar with a couple slices toast with Kerrygold butter.

Agreed about the tea…I love all varieties, but midwinter is NOT the time for a delicate darjeeling or similar. Gimme a sturdy Irish brew! (And Kerrygold butter on the toast is no slouch of an accompaniment 😊)

Ah, it's crazy that you mention the sliced hot dogs in the lentils. My dad, with a German background, loved hot dogs sliced into beans, and he would add pickles, sometimes cheese. For me, I want Italian tortellini soup with buttered toast dunked in, followed by pie (any kind). Or just gimme a bowl of pasta.

That all sounds delicious! Comfort food is the best! From Dori Greenspan, I make an orange scented lentil soup. The orange is key- really brightens it up. For real old fashioned comfort, I make a cheesy chicken noodle casserole with peas or peppers. I am making it tonight! That recipe I tore out from some magazine long ago. And I do make a decent carbonara-no cream! I use an old ATK’s recipe, but use guanciale instead of bacon. Finally, I love my mom’s pot roast with gravy and mashed potatoes. I tried to choose just one….

Potatoes! They can be baked, roasted, boiled, or scalloped! Or, twice baked! Or french fries. Or home fries.

oh...I will have to go with Brazilian Moqueca fish soup (spicey) for comfort food and Mulled wine for drink!

Winter weather triggers my "nesting" instincts lol. I bake and simmer things that will make the house smell delicious for hours on end. Don't get me wrong, I eat it all, but I get the most comfort from the process and the smells!

I also love wrapping my hands around a big, warm mug of coffee or weirdly, hot lemonade. But if I want it quick, nothing beats a hit of Jägermeister or brandy. : )

I love winter comfort foods: goulash (making it tonight), chili, soups.

Probably my favorite is a take on Olive Garden's pasta and fagioli soup with lots of garlic, beans and spicy sausage.

Chili and cornbread. I live in Arizona, so cold weather for me is anything under 70F 😀

Yes, but you have those chilly nights in AZ, so chili is perfect! 🌶️

Favorite is beef burgundy stew, I make it in my pressure cooker for simmered all day deliciousness in about 45 minutes. Also recently discovered Rancho Gordo beans and love their Yellow-eyed beans for a side dish. Looking forward to making White Chicken Pozole with their hominy. If you like ramen, the Half Baked Harvest Spicy Short Rib Ramen is amazing, although I substitute a roast for more meat, less expensive option.

Where is that ramen recipe from, Anne Marie?

Hi Larissa, It’s on the Halfbakedharvest.com website, she has a bunch of ramen recipes, my favorite so far is the Spicy short rib peanut one. Sorry, can’t get a link to cooperate on my phone.

Several things come to mind. Breakfast for dinner including pancakes home fries and bacon. More traditionally I like chicken with gravy and dumplings and of course mashed potatoes. For an easy comfort food I love soup specifically corn chowder, classic minestrone, or lentil soup. I am a big coffee drinker but in the winter I enjoy hot tea with honey in the afternoon. And of course cinnamon rolls are given with a hot cup of coffee anytime. i

I love making a big pot of beans to be used in different meals throughout the week. I also love a spicy, brothy soup full of hearty vegetables and greens that I can dunk some fresh buttered bread into.

I discovered the recipe for "Lentils, Monastery Style" in Diet for a Small Planet 40+ years ago, and it is still our very favorite (among many!) lentils recipe. I'll make it regularly throughout the winter, and my daughter now makes it for her children--it's a hit with the 3-year old and 15-month old baby!

I make a Lentil curry that I love.
